«YOU CARE ABOUT ME»

«I am poor and needy, but, Lord God, you care about me» (Psalm 40:17, CEV).

ARE NOT TWO SPARROWS sold for a copper coin?» Jesus asked His disciples (Matthew 10:29). The Greek word translated as «copper coin» is assarion, a small Roman copper coin equivalent to 1/16 of a denarius, which was a day’s salary. Luke makes an even better offer and says you could buy «five sparrows. . . for two copper coins» (Luke 12:6). These birds served as food for the very poor; they were among the most affordable products in the market. They were literally something insignificant, of very little commercial value. Nevertheless, after making it very clear in listeners’ minds how cheap those birds were, the Lord declared, «Not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will.»

Isn’t it amazing to discover that the God of great galaxies cares for and sustains creatures as insignificant as these little birds? The psalmist expressed it in this beautiful poem: «These all wait for You, that You may give them their food in due season. What You give them they gather in; You open Your hand, they are filled with good» (Psalm 104:27, 28). If the Creator watches over the smallest creatures, we, who are worth «more than many sparrows» (Matthew 10:31, NIV), can be sure that He is aware of everything that happens to us. Our tears are written in His book (Psalm 56:8); the «hairs of [our] head are all numbered» (Matthew 10:30); He sees the path we take and counts our steps (Job 31:4); He is afflicted in all our affliction (Isaiah 63:9).

In Steps to Christ, Ellen G. White declared, «When men go forth to their daily toil, as when they engage in prayer; when they lie down at night, and when they rise in the morning; when the rich man feasts in his palace, or when the poor man gathers his children about the scanty board, each is tenderly watched by the heavenly Father. No tears are shed that God does not notice. There is no smile that He does not mark» (p. 85).

We live in an individualistic world, a society in which everyone turns their back on one another. Even so, isn’t it comforting to know that our Lord is aware of every detail of our lives and watches over us. Just as David did, today we can cling to this beautiful promise: «I am poor and needy, but, Lord God, you care about me» (Psalm 40:18, CEV).
