ANXIETY
«Therefore, do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or What shall we wear?» (Matthew 6:3 1)
On many occasions, the needs of daily life are a source of concern and worry. We can feel calm and relaxed when the fridge is full and the closet is overflowing with clothes. It is not difficult when the paycheck is «guaranteed» and received on time every month. However, when these elements are insufficient or the work is unstable and the income must be sought on a daily basis in order to survive, things change considerably. Even more when there are commitments to fulfill or members of the family that depend on it. There are still numerous and true testimonies of those who witnessed God’s parental care in times of shortages.
- A humble slave and her son, in the middle of the Beersheba desert, in the south of Israel, cried to God for water when she thought she would die. «Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink» (Gen. 21:19).
- An immigrant, who sought shelter in God (Ruth 2:12), went out to glean heads of barley the harvesters «forgot» to mow. At night, she came back home with almost 40 kg of barley which she shared with her mother-in-law (vv. 17-18).
A widow had flour and oil to bake bread for months in a time of desperate hunger and extreme drought. Because she trusted in God, «the bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke by Elijah» (I Kings 17:16).
Jim and Shelley, an octogenarian couple, needed water to survive after being kept isolated and without means of communication at more than 400 C after Katrina hurricane swept the United States in 2005. After having cried to God for help, they were rescued by two young volunteers of ACTS World Relief, a first-aid organization.
What about you? Do you find yourself in an extreme situation where you needed? something desperately? God has chosen to manifest His power especially in moments like these! Your necessity is God’s opportunity to act (Counsels for the Church, ch. 61, p. 336). Your necessity is also your opportunity to trust in Him.
Do not be afraid. You can find yourself in the best moment!
