WORKS THAT REALLY ENDURE

«I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it» (Ecclesiastes 8:17, NIV).

PEOPLE OF THE PAST and of the present have created colossal imperfect works with their hands in order to express their might and exhibit their greatness» as people who want to leave their mark on this planet forever and so that the whole world marvels at their great achievements. We talk, for example, of the so-called «seven wonders of the ancient world.» However, of those seven wonders, only the Great Pyramid of Giza, in Egypt, is still standing; all the others have already disappeared. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which were in what is present-day Iraq, disappeared after the first century AD; the Temple of Artemis in present-day Turkey was destroyed by a fire in 356 BC; the famous statue of Zeus in Olympia was demolished by command of Theodosius II in 426 AD; and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, together with the Colossus of Rhodes and the Pharos (Lighthouse) of Alexandria ended up in ruins because of earthquakes. As you can see, they might have been very wonderful, but there are barely any traces left of them.

In spite of everything, people insist on creating and admiring human monuments, and on occasion, they forget the divine ones, such as nature. Human monuments can last many years, like Giza in Egypt, but they will not be able to last forever. The only eternal works are those God has created for His children. The foundations of those works are not necessarily tangible, but spiritual, such as the law of God, which will always be valid while heaven and earth exist (see Matthew 5:18); the plan of salvation, which is eternal and forever (see Isaiah 45: 17); or divine love, which «is eternal, and his faithfulness lasts forever» (Psalm 100:5, GNT).

If something exists—perfect, unchanging, and transcending time—it is the work of the hand of God. Thus, «we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal» (2 Corinthians 4:18). Let us always set our eyes on the beauty and durability of eternal things.
