WONDER WOMAN

«And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them» (Romans 8:28, NLT.)

How much does the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31 sleep? In addition to being a wife, mother, businesswoman and artisan, the Bible says she «gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household» and «her lamp burns late into the night» (Proverbs 31:15,18, NLT). Proverbs 31 an allegorical representation, but when we read it literally, instead of being filled with wisdom, we are filled with guilt.

Proverbs 31 does not command us to be Wonder Woman, In their book Captivating, Stasi and John Eldredge comment, «We’re all living in the shadow of that infamous icon: ‘The Proverbs 31 Woman; whose life is so busy I wonder, when does she have time for friendships, for taking walks, or reading good books? Her light never goes out at night? When does she have sex? Somehow she has sanctified the shame most women live under… Is that supposed to be godly—that sense that you are a failure as a woman?»

No doubt the Bible teaches about the importance of being industrious, but the idea that our value depends on how many things we can checkoff our to-do list comes from the enemy. When he manages to convince us of that, we are constantly exhausted and full of guilt. As Jesus said: the truth makes free. Your productivity does not determine your value. «Of course make a to-do list! Of course, do the best you can!» says John Piper in an interview [God’s Sovereign Plans Behind Your Most Unproductive Days]. «Then, walk in the peace and freedom that if [your plan] crashes on the rocks of reality, God will not be measuring you by what you have managed to do, but by your trust in His goodness, wisdom and sovereignty to use this new disaster of inefficiency for His glory and for the good of all those involved.»

God seldom leads us down the shortest path. Although our consumer society is obsessed with efficiency and speed. God is interested in sanctifying us. A goad day is a day in which we trust that God can use everything that happens to us for His glory and our growth.

Dear Lord, I want to rest in the certainty that my value comes from You. When my plans fail, please help me to trust that Your plan is still in place.
