«WITH GOD’S HELP WE WILL DO MIGHTY THINGS»

«All human help is useless. With God’s help we will do mighty things» (Psalm 60:11, 12, NLT).

WE were all raised hearing things we later realized were not the way we had been taught. For instance, according to what we have been told all our lives, who invented cars? For a long time, this marvelous invention was attributed to Henry Ford, and that’s what has been taught everywhere, when it was actually the result of the work of Karl Benz, a German. He began to produce automobiles in 1886, a decade before Ford.

For almost a century and a half, it was also believed that Alexander Graham Bell, from Scotland, had invented the telephone, and this was taught far and wide. However, on June 11, 2002, the United States Congress passed a resolution declaring Antonio Meucci, from Italy, the legitimate inventor of the telephone. The same could be said about light bulbs; we have been told all our lives that they were invented by Thomas Edison, right? In fact, they were not invented by him, but by Humphry Davy. And in less formal environments, I’m sure many of us have witnessed how merit belonging to a person was attributed to another.

The same thing constantly happens in the spiritual realm. Many actions God has performed in our favor have been attributed to others. The Lord warned the children of Israel, «Do not think in your heart, after the Lord your God has cast them out before you, saying, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land’ » (Deuteronomy 9:4). Neither was Israel to say, » ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’ And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth» (Deuteronomy 8:17, 18).

Paul’s questions are more relevant today than ever: «And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?» (1 Corinthians 4:7). Let’s not keep attributing what God has done in our lives to others, or believe that what we have is only the result of the sweat of our brow—doing so is the same as taking merit away from God for what He has done in our favor. The Bible is clear: Whether we have land, riches, or health, we have received it all from God, hence the honor and glory are His alone.

We should always remember that «all human help is useless. With God’s help we will do mighty things» (Psalm 60:11, 12, NLT). Our victories have only one main character, and it’s not us, but our wonderful God.
