WISDOM PERSONIFIED

WISDOM

«I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge and discretion» (Proverbs 8:12).

One of the ways in which the Bible presents the story of salvation is through the personification of Wisdom. Proverbs chapter 8 magnificently presents human knowledge and a way to express the depths of knowledge that leads to the roots of faith and reasoning. Some Bible scholars apply this passage directly to Jesus. A link between a god or goddess of wisdom with the creation of the world was frequent in the myths of Israel’s neighboring people. Although, that shouldn’t make us discard the figure of the Savior of the world within that story.Wisdom, God, men, and a narrator, and historical and contemporary readers, appear in Proverbs 8, as well as the writer himself.

Wisdom is the one the speaks the most, but doesn’t only talk about itself, but also to exalt God and await a positive response from the human race. Wisdom has human features: lips, a mouth, a voice; it shows feelings: it calms, encourages, loves, delights itself, rejoices and plays. At the same time it acts as a human being when it stops, walks, teaches, lives, finds, grants and prospers. It also has attributes such as justice, truth, significance, intuition, intelligence, strength to act tenaciously, and guidance. And it offers attractive blessings: counsel, genuine riches, honor, and an exemplary life. Wisdom’s discourse has important links to Jesus’s message. Actually, it is He who came to give us an example of a life ruled by the principles of wisdom found in Proverbs.

It is only through the grace of Christ that human beings can acquire the ability to live wisely. By nature, we are foolish and weak, rebellious toward learning and discipline (Proverbs 1:7). Yes, it’s easier for us to have fun, be irresponsible and forget our obligations, although we know it’s not right (Romans 7:15). We’re like fussy children that need to be educated in the principles of the heavenly Father to make the best of the happy times the Lord has given us in this world. Therefore, our passage through the world is an educational process that prepares us for eternal life. But only we can decide if we accept the great Master that’s ready to show us the wonders of knowledge.

Invite Jesus today to come into your life and transform your heart and place love for His Word and for learning within you.
