WISDOM AND POWER

«Coming out He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. When He came to the place, He said to them, ‘Pray that you may not enter into temptation’ » (Luke 22:39, 40).

HOW COULD JUDAS, SO EASILY, find Jesus on the night of his betrayal? The apostle John gave us the answer when he wrote that «Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples» (John 18:2).

The place to which he referred was none other than the Garden of Gethsemane, located at the foot of the Mount of Olives; that the Lord «had often visited for meditation and prayer—The Desire of Ages, ch. 74, p. 685. It is notable that the Lord had a place He often went to pray. However, much more impressive is the fact that He prayed. He, in whom «dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily» (Colossians 2:9), prayed often! Is this not a fact worthy of our greatest consideration?

The testimony of the Scriptures is that «in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed» (Mark 1:35). As Ellen G. White wrote, «It was in hours of solitary prayer that Jesus in His earth life received wisdom and power.»—Education, ch. 30, p. 259.

The product of those hours of communion resulted in the constant trust He had in the Father. And if we read the Gospels carefully, it will not be difficult for us to see a pattern: the most important events of His ministry were preceded or followed by moments of prayer. Thus, for example, He prayed before choosing the disciples, before resurrecting Lazarus, on the Mount of Transfiguration, when His fame increased, when some Greeks wanted to meet Him, in Gethsemane. No wonder the service He gave to humanity was «without failure or hesitation»!

And now the obligatory conclusion: If the Savior of the world, the Son of God Himself, felt the need to pray, what is to be expected of us, who are besieged by temptation at every step! Therefore, what if, starting today, we propose every morning to start the day as the Lord did; that is, by asking the Father for wisdom and power to face the challenges of the new day?

«Keep your wants, your joys, your sorrows, your cares, and your fears before God. You cannot burden Him; you cannot weary Him. He who numbers the hairs of your head is not indifferent to the wants of His children. «—Steps to Christ, ch. 11, p. 100.

Heavenly Father, please help me so that nothing will prevent me from having a personal encounter with You every day as I pray and study Your Word. At the light of a new day, may the first thing I hear be
Your voice speaking to my heart.
