«For I know the plans I have for you, ‘declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'» (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV).
I saw a woman perform a butterfly wing transplant. Katie Van Blaricum creates artwork with insects in Kansas, United States. When the local zoo discovered one of its monarch butterflies had been born with a deformed wing, they got in touch with her. Katie knew exactly what to do! She placed the butterfly in the refrigerator for a few minutes to slow it down. Then, holding it with tweezers, she cut the damaged wing (a procedure that does not cause the butterfly any pain; like when we cut our hair). Finally, using super glue, Katie glued a new wing from a Graphium butterfly that had died a few days earlier. When the weather was more favorable, Katie let the butterfly go. Being able to fly for the first time, the butterfly left, fluttering an orange wing and a turquoise one.
Sometimes, in order to fly, we have to let a dream die. Sheridan Voysey, an Australian writer and radio announcer, in his blog entry entitled «When Do You Let a Dream Die?» explains how hard it is to make peace with that concept: «The idea of letting go of a dream goes against almost everything in our culture. Bookstores abound with books about finding a dream, pursuing a dream, fulfilling a dream! The standard Hollywood film script ends with a dream coming true. No one talks about letting go of a dream — letting one die.» However, in order to move forward, there are times in which we need to abandon a plan.
Sometimes God clearly says «No» or «Not now.» Other times, pursuing a dream affects our physical; mental or emotional health. Or perhaps, clinging to a plan implies sacrificing relationships we should not sacrifice. A dream might hold a place in our identity that only belongs to God. Likewise, it is possible for a perfectly good dream not to come true only because we live in an imperfect world where sin exists. Regardless of the reason, sometimes we have to let it go. Sometimes we need to allow God to cut a wing off and give us an entirely different future than what we had planned.
Lord, You know my dreams. If any of them are not in Your plans, help me to let them go. You are trustworthy; I accept Your plans for my life, even when I do not understand them.
