Remember the biblical Story of the widow who gave more than anyone else?
This widow was dressed in plain clothing and waited in a comer of the temple in Jerusalem to get closer and give her offering. Several wealthy and well-dressed people approached the temple offering chest and tossed large amounts of coins in a way that everyone could hear.
When all these wealthy people left, the widow approached the chest and gently tossed two coins, the smallest and least valuable at the time, and then quickly withdrew.
She thought that no one had seen her, but Jesus was there and said to His disciples, “This poor widow . . . really gave more than all those rich people.” The disciples could not understand Him, because they knew that she was the person who had given the least. However, Jesus said to them, “The rich have plenty; they gave only what they did not need. This woman is very poor. But she gave all she had. And she needed that money to help her live” (ICB). You can read the story in Mark 12:41-44.
When we give offerings, we show our gratitude to God for His blessings. We also contribute to maintain the church building and its expenses such as electricity, water, and furniture, just as we do in our home. The offerings also help people who live elsewhere to build churches, schools, hospitals, or spread the message of Jesus to places where they don’t yet 1now Him.
But remember that Jesus considers your offerings of great value when you give them with joy and all your heart, just as the widow did.
