WHO IS FAMOUS FOR USING A SLING?

Underline the correct answer:

a. Jacob

b. Moses

c. David

Have you ever seen a shepherd?

If you live in a city you probably haven’t, but if you five near the countryside, you most likely have.

Being a shepherd is a very hard and difficult profession.

Shepherds always have to take care of their sheep day and night.

They have to lead them through rocky places and hills so they can eat, and take them to rivers so they can drink.

And at night they have to be alert in case wolves or other animals come near to attack their sheep.

They also have to protect them  from thieves and carry them if they get sick.

In Bible days, shepherds always carried a robe to cover themselves with if it was cold at night, a pouch that was like a heather bag to carry their food, a staff or rod to lean on while walking through fields and leading their sheep, and a sling to hurl rocks at animals who approached their sheep.

Do you know what a sling looks like? It’s a piece of fabric or leather tied two strings.

A rock is placed on that piece and the sling is spun around very fast while holding the ends of the two strings.

Then you let go of one of the strings and the rock shoots out with great speed.

In Israel, shepherds weren’t the only ones who used a sling as a weapon; soldiers also used them.

Before being the king of Israel, David was a shepherd. He knew how to use a sling very well and he defeated the giant Goliath with one.

Remember that story?

But do you think that David’s skill in using the sling was the only thing  that defeated Goliath?

Of course not! David had great faith in God.

Draw a sling in your Prayer Journal and ask God to give you as much faith as David had to overcome any problem you may have today.
