c. Magdala
Have you ever cried because you felt sad and alone?
Maybe your parents have gone on a trip or you have gone to spend a few days with a family member. It’s sad to feel alone and away from your family, right?
People who cry a lot are said to cry more than Magdalene.” Have you ever heard that expression? Do you know where it comes from? In the Bible a woman is mentioned named Mary Magdalene who was the sister of Lazarus and Martha. The three of them were very good friends of Jesus.
Why was Mary called Magdalene? Apparently, she had been born in a place called Magdala, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. And since there were many women whose name was Mary, they gave her that nickname to distinguish her from the rest.
Why did Mary Magdalene cry? Once, she wept as she washed Jesus’s feet with a very expensive perfume, and she dried them with her hair. Mary Magdalene was so sad that she would not stop crying, because Jesus had said that He was going to die.
On another occasion, she wept when she saw Jesus die on the cross. At the foot of that cross, she felt lonely and very sad.
Mary Magdalene was the first to see that Jesus’s tomb was empty. Mary wept and wept because she thought that someone had taken the body of her friend Jesus. However, Jesus had risen and while she was still crying, He asked, “Woman, why are you crying?” Mary’s tears made it impossible for her to see that Jesus was at her side, but when she heard and saw Him, her tears turned into great happiness.
Then she ran to tell the whole world that Jesus was alive.
The next time you cry, don’t let your tears stop you from seeing and hearing Jesus—He’s always by your side. Thank Him in your Prayer Journal.
