I’m not a criminal,» Marco insisted as the officer in charge of the firing squad motioned for him to start digging. «I’m a Seventh day Adventist, and we don’t get mixed up in such activity.»
The officer shook his head. «You’re lying. You were found with the gang of robbers, and that means you’re a criminal. Now dig!»
Marco thrust his shovel into the ground as his mind raced. The Guatemalan dictator of that time was a man of action— usually violent action. The authorities ordered criminals to march out into a field carrying shovels. The officer in charge would tell each to dig a hole. Then the firing squad would line up, aim their rifles at the heart of each felon, and shoot. The bodies would tumble into the freshly dug graves.
«I am a member of the Adventist Church, and I was only trying to witness to those men,» Marco insisted, knowing it would be his last chance to save himself. «See, I’ve got a New Testament right here in my pocket.»
«You don’t know anything about the Bible,» the officer snarled.
«I can recite the verses I’ve underlined. Test me. I’ll prove I’m a Christian, not a crook.»
The officer shrugged. «OK. Recite this one.» He let Marco see the first couple words. The prisoner cleared his throat and repeated the text word for word, complete with the reference. «And this one,» the officer commanded. Marco quoted the next text. «And this one.» The same thing happened.
When Marco finished, the soldier handed back the Bible. «I’m convinced. You’re not a thief. You may go.»
