“When the righteous rejoice, there is great glory; but when the wicked arise, men hide themselves” (Proverbs 28:12).
WE HAVE ALL READ and hear about the Nazi concentration s that Hitler built in several European countries, where nearly six million Jews were exterminated. Episodes that marked human history for its cruelty were seen in those camps. Since then, historians have decided to recover documents that tell what happened in the camps. Among so much information, there is a fact that seems interesting: to this day in
some of those extermination camps the birds have stopped singing. It’s as if they still mourn for the millions of people who lost their lives there. Of course, the latter is just my speculation. However, I believe it leaves us a lesson to learn.
When a place is dreary; it can be felt in the environment; everyone living
there shares in the same mood. The same can be said for emotionally toxic environment. Apathy, indifference and insensitivity are the ingredients of a toxic atmosphere that can lead to illness and even death. It’s not hard to think of places that are this way because in a world dominated by sin there are plenty. What is hard to think and believe is that in some homes this same kind of environment is breathed.
In a home where warmth reigns, children sing like birds, secure and trusting that their parents care for them. Words of approval are heard and criticism is exterminated, thus giving life to its inhabitants. Laughter is frequent and love is expressed through words and actions, while discipline and education are present.
Some marriages experience “Emotional acidity.» The spouses constants show on their face a gesture similar to what we make when we taste something acidic or bitter. Happiness, tenderness and spontaneity of love mm to have disappeared shortly after the wedding. In those marriages, birds no longer sing; only doves seem to cry out long and sorrowfully at dusk.
Our home should not be a miserable place like a concentration or m- termination camp, nor a toxic environment with emotional warfare and crossfires. Ellen G. White affirms that it should be a “piece of heaven, like a foretaste of the happiness we will enjoy forever in the home God he prepared for us. Being pan of it should be our daily prayer and desire.
