The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass. REVELATION 21:21, NIV
During a family road trip to California, we drove to a place near Placerville, California, to visit a gold mine. Back in the 1800s, the United States experienced a gold rush that drew thousands of people west to see if they could strike to California and get rich quick. Reports came out of California about people supposedly finding gold just lying around on the ground! They heard stories about people who went out to California, claimed a spot in the hills with a stream and a pan, and they found gold.
People in that time were obsessed with finding gold-in many cases risking everything they had for a chance at finding gold. For many of them the story did not end well. Visiting the gold mine was a reminder for me of how desperate people were to find those little gold rocks. After getting our tickets, we followed the path to a cave opening. A large wooden door was built to keep people out, but it was open now for tourist to come in and and visit. It was a self guide tour, so we got to explore the mine at our own pace. We walked deeper and deeper into the mine. At one point we could see remnants of the old tracks and carts that would carry tons and tons of rock out of the cave as the miners dug for gold.
The Bible says that in heaven the streets will be made of gold. I once heard a joke about a man who loved his gold so much that he wanted to take a suitcase full of it to heaven. When he arrived at the gate, the angel didn’t understand why he wanted to bring pavement to heaven!
Don’t get caught up in loving gold or silver. True happiness can be found by loving God and following His commandments!
