«You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world» (1 John 4:4).
PHILIP YANCEY ASKS THE FOLLOWING QUESTION: What would happen if we, the children of God, acted as if the words of the apostle John, in today’s text, were true? The following words: «He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
Can we imagine the transformation that would take place in our lives if we lived every day with the conviction that the almighty God is on our side, and that «He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us» (1 John 3:24)?
What would you expect, for example, to be my behavior in knowing that God’s presence accompanies me by way of His Spirit? How should I treat the people around me? What should my vocabulary be like? What should I think? What should I talk about? In short, how should I live today if I know that God walks with me at all times?
The fact is not only that God is with us, but that He is greater and more powerful than any other power, whether it be earthly kingdoms or spiritual powers.
What impact should this solemn truth have on our daily lives? If the power that is with us is greater than that in the world, what attitude should we face our challenges with? How should we react to the threats of our enemies and to the temptations of the evil one? Where would remain our fears of failure, material losses, illness, and death?
What I am trying to say is that God’s presence in our lives can’t be just an idea. It must be a living reality, with practical results. «Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,» the apostle Paul writes, «he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new» (2 Corinthians 5: 17). In this great truth—that the God who is with His children is greater than any other power—have all the men and women we today consider heroes of the faith anchored themselves to. All of them!
What would happen, then, if we lived with that same conviction today? Here is what would happen: «The soul that is yielded to Christ becomes His own fortress, which He holds in a revolted world, and He intends that no authority shall be known in it but His own. A soul thus kept in possession by the heavenly agencies is impregnable to the assaults of Satan. «—The Desire of Ages, ch. 33, p. 324.
That’s you and me. An impregnable fortress, which God sustains in a world in rebellion.
Dear Jesus, today I want to thank You because Your mighty right hand
sustains me at all times. And because since You’re with me, who can be against me?
