a. To disrespect God
b. To misuse God’s name
c. To disrespect God and misuse His name
Do you know what it means to swear?
If you look it up in a dictionary, you’ll see that it means “to make a solemn declaration or affirmation with God as a witness.”
There are many people who instead of saying “yes” or “no,” use God’s name so others will believe them.
But Jesus told us in the Bible not to swear or use God’s name for that because it does not show respect for Him.
The third commandment, found in Exodus 20:7, says we shouldn’t use God’s name in vain.
Do you know what that means?
God is holy and so is His name. Everything you say or do should praise His name, and show respect and reverence toward the Creator.
Do you think it’s alright for people to use God’s name in jokes and conversations where He’s not given the importance and reverence He deserves?
Of course not!
If you believe in Jesus you’re a Christian, right?
A Christian is a follower of Christ. That’s why you should always try to speak, think and do everything the way Jesus did.
When you misbehave, you’re also taking His name in vain.
In the Bible, Jesus says that if you love Him but don’t obey Him, you also take His name in vain.
Now do you know what it means to “take the Lord’s name in vain.” Review today’s devotional and answer the question in your own words in your Prayer Journal.
