«WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO FOR YOU?»

«So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened» (Luke 11 :9-10).

IF AT THIS VERY MOMENT the Lord asked you, «What do you want Me to do for you?» what would you say to Him?

Scripture records such a case, when Jesus and His disciples were preparing to leave Jericho, they were followed by «a great multitude» (Matthew 20:29). These many people were on their way to Jerusalem, to celebrate the Passover, and according to the custom of the time, the Master spoke to them as He walked. As the crowd advances, a blind man named Bartimaeus «sat by the road begging» (Mark 10:46). As soon as Bartimaeus hears that among the travelers is Jesus, he begins to cry out loudly: » ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ » (v. 47). When the people rebuke him to be quiet, he shouts all the louder. And Jesus stops.

Why does the Lord stop? Let us remember that the one who asks for help is a blind man who has to beg in order to survive. Let us also remember that his cries prevent Jesus from teaching the multitude. At that moment, the man is a nuisance! However, Jesus stops. What’s more, He not only stops, but sends for the man. Why does He do this?

I like the way Amzi Clarence Dixon responds when he writes that «the cry of the afflicted soul always detains Jesus.» Between teaching the multitude and helping someone in need, what does the Lord choose? He always chooses to help!

» ‘What do you want Me to do for you?’ Jesus asked the blind man (v. 50). With Bartimaeus replied, » ‘Rabboni, that I may receive my sight’ » (v. 51). Scripture says that instantly, «he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road» (v. 52). Isn’t this wonderful? The Lord stops what He is doing to attend to the cry of a blind and poor man who most likely occupies the lowest place on Jericho’s social ladder. That cry was: «Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!» When reading these lines, I don’t know what your greatest need is, but one thing I know: whatever your problem, your affliction, the Lord cares. He cares because He spilled His blood on Calvary for you. He cares because you are a son, a daughter, of the heavenly Father. What are you waiting for, then, to ask the blessed Savior to have mercy on you?

Thank You, heavenly Father, for being interested in my needs.
In the name of Jesus, I ask You to fulfill them according to Your will. Above all, I ask You to have mercy on me; forgive me, and always dwell in my heart.
