Have you ever heard the saying «an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth
Many people use the phrase ‘Jan eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth» to get revenge on someone or to show their hatred toward another person, but they don’t know its origin or its real meaning.
Do you want to know where this saying appears for the first time? In the book of Exodus 21:24, it was an indication that Moses gave to the judges of the people of Israel so that no one would harm their neighbor more than they had been harmed themselves. It was actually a way to show mercy toward others. In the time of the people of Israel, the judges had to watch that nobody did a greater harm to another person, even if that person had treated them badly. Therefore, it was a guideline intended for judges, and it prevented problems among the people. However, some began to use this standard for their personal use and provoked hatred among people.
If someone does something to you and you’re angry, the first thing you think about is treating them the same way or worse, right? That’s how ancient people changed the meaning of this saying and that’s how we use it today. But it’s not being used correctly!
Human beings always find the bad side of things. We change what is meant to do good and make it something to do wrong.
Therefore, Jesus had to come teach us its true meaning.
In Matthew 5:38, Jesus says that although we have heard that we must return evil for evil, we must do the opposite: return good for evil.
In your Prayer Journal, ask Jesus to help you so that if someone hurts you or treats you badly, you will not do the same. Remember that ‘l it takes two to make a quarrel.»
