«Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord» (1 Thessalonians 4:17).
I CAN’T tell people watching how fabulous I feel to have been picked by Blue Origin to go on this trip.» These were Wally Funk’s words when she found out Jeff Bezos had chosen her to travel to space.
Wally had spent more than six decades trying to make the dream of her youth come true. At the age of twenty-one, she joined the Women’s Space Program, but NASA cancelled the project. Nevertheless, now past the age of eighty, in her heart she still cherished the dream of going beyond the Karman line (the boundary between the atmosphere and outer space). Finally, the long-awaited day arrived: On July 20, 2021, Ms. Funk boarded the New Shepard spaceship, and from there, at about sixty-five miles above sea level, she was able to see spectacular images of our planet.
I believe Wally Funk was right to feel privileged that one of the richest men in the world chose her to be in space for eleven minutes. I have to admit I was moved to tears by her joy in the video Bezos uploaded on Instagram.
Shouldn’t we have great reason to rejoice because God, the most powerful being in the universe, has chosen us to travel to the very heart of heaven? Paul says that «from the beginning God chose [us] to be saved» (2 Thessalonians 2:13, NIV). We will enjoy that salvation forever when we take a direct flight «to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem» (Hebrews 12:22).
God has given us this wonderful promise: «For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet Of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord» (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17).
We will be taken to heaven. No one needs to stay behind; there is room for us all in the Lord’s spaceship.
