«We shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is» (1 John 3:2).
LET’S REVIEW the verse we looked at yesterday, Romans 12:2. The original Greek verb translated as «transformed» is metamorphoö. We all grew up hearing a word that is very similar to the one Paul used: metamorphosis. Metamorphosis is a transition from one state to another; it is a change in the nature and essence of the transformed being. Metamorphosis does not imply a mended life, but rather a complete transformation of the essence of who we are.
Of course, that change doesn’t begin with the way I dress, what I eat, or what I do. It’s not a work that begins on the outside, but within. Paul referred to a transformation and renewing of our «understanding.» I like that the New Living Translation refers to a change in «the way you think.»
Why should a transformation begin with the way we think? Because our minds «are defiled» (Titus 1:15). And that deplorable internal state can only be transformed (radically changed in its very essence) by a power working in our hearts. That’s why yesterday we said that the transformation of our corrupt character is a labor God Himself performs. The Holy Spirit is the agent that the Lord employs to carry out that supernatural metamorphosis within us.
Paul expressed that in 2 Corinthians 3:18: «But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.» What produces that change? The action Of the Holy Spirit! And «we all» are offered that work of transformation by the Spirit; no one is excluded if they want to partake of it.
Further on, Paul defines that process of change with these words: «Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day» (2 Corinthians 4:16). It is a continuous, progressive transformation, a spiritual experience that increases daily. That’s why we always feel we haven’t yet reached the peak of transformation, and that’s why we cling to this promise: «Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for shall see Him as He is» (1 John 3:2).
