“We do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things
which are not seen. For the things which ore seen are temporary,
but the things which are not seen ore eternal» (2 Corinthians 4:18, GNT).
TODAY let’s talk about the second lesson I learned when I allowed myself to be deceived by my own eyes: the fact that we can’t see something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. We live in a time in which people tend to feel proud of only
believing that which they’re able to see. «You’ve got to see it to believe it’’ we say. Does it sound familiar? It’s a universal thing.
Clothed in that closed-mindedness we follow the example of Thomas, Jesus‘s disciple, and say, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe” (John 20:25). Thomas captivates us, inspires us. We identify with his style: seeing to believe. But my brief moment of madness, as we read yesterday, taught me I don’t need to see electricity to know it exists. I couldn’t see it, but it was there and made itself felt.
Regarding our spiritual lives, “seeing» should not be our first option, either. Although we can’t see God, we are to have the absolute certainty that He exists and that He is very close to us. Paul says, “We fix our eyes on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18, GNT). The idea of this verse is that, sadly, we pay more attention to what is visible to the detriment of what is invisible, when it should not be so.
Moses’s success lay precisely in looking at what could not be perceived by the sense of sight: «By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he loomed to the reward. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible» (Hebrews 11:24-27).
The last phrase is marvelous: “For he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.“ The Invisible is still upholding our lives, because “we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Electric shocks in our lives have taught us to see what is invisible.
