I REMEMBER HAVING, on one occasion, made a trip of a few hours by train, from my house to my uncles’ house. Second class tickets put us in the back of one of the last cars. Unlike first-class tickets, the seats were not cushioned; they were made of wood and after a while it was uncomfortable to sit on such a hard surface. In the middle of the trip, it was necessary to open the windows, since the second-class carriages did not have air conditioning; then, I began to count the trees and the hills that were being left behind. At lunch time, my mother spread a tablecloth over one of the seats and put the food in front of the family. It was really exciting!
At the end of the trip, I arrived with my face dirty from the black smoke emitted by the engines, disheveled by the constant air that came through the lowered windows, but with hundreds of wonderful images in my memory. So far I remember it as the best trip of my life. I can’t even imagine the comfort of the premium cars, because the experience just seemed perfect.
Some compare life to a trip. I want to appropriate this comparison today, so that we can reflect together. Of course, the Christian woman’s journey through life is enjoyed, even if there is «smoke» and «wind,» because we know that we are going to eternity, to the happiest encounter that can be had. As we move forward, past experiences are left behind and new ones are built, the environment, circumstances and people change. Everything offers a show worth living intensely. In the Bible, we read that we are pilgrims on this planet, but our citizenship is in heaven. So why should we be suffocated by the vicissitudes and troubles of the journey? Does the harshness of some people hurt you? Do the discomforts of the present life hurt? Remember that everything is temporary and that everything edifies if you are in the task of renewing your understanding,
God has invited us to his home, which will be yours and mine very soon. Enjoy your journey through life, even if you suffer discomfort; Always keep in mind that soon you will see God and all suffering will be over. As we travel, let’s keep hope alive and persevere.
