«Pray without ceasing» (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
Christian author and preacher, Graham Cooke wanted his prayers to be less wooden, to have more fluidity and naturalness. One day, it occurred to him that the best way to do this was to sit down and have tea with God. «At first, when I was learning to pray, I wondered what it would be like to be in God’s presence. Then I made the decision to normalize prayer. Since I am a typical English man, I decided to prepare two cups of tea each morning: one for me and one for the Lord. Then I sat down to chat with Him and always felt His presence in my heart,» he said in his blog (https://brilliantperspectives. com/blog/). I love the idea of having a time for a daily chat with God, a little ritual of friendship.
For some strange reason, we tend to think that God wants us to use our reasoning but not our creativity when praying. We forget that we speak to the God who paints the sky with different colors at every sunset; the God who put about three hundred billion stars alone in the Milky Way; the God who thought that forming an animal with the beak of a duck, the tail of a beaver, and the body of an otter was a good idea (and as if the duck-billed platypus were not innovative enough, He also made it a mammal that lays eggs and has no breasts). As we pray, we speak to the Creative of all creatives, the source of all human creativity. Of course, we must use our creativity!
In the book Prayer, Ellen G. White said, «If we keep the Lord ever before us, . . . Our prayers will take the form of a conversation with God as we would talk with a friend. He will speak His mysteries to us personally.»— ch. 1, p. 12. Prayers are conversations— not monologues—in which God reveals His secrets to us. We can keep God’s presence in our minds with creativity and imagination. We can go for a walk with God, or chat with Him as if He were a passenger sitting in our car. Or we can invite Him to tea.
Dear Lord, I thank You because You designed prayer as a conversation and not as a monologue. Please reactivate my creativity and awaken my heart to feel Your presence once again. Help me discover creative ways to spend time with You and enjoy Your company today.
