IN DECEMBER 2021, I watched Don’t Look Up, a movie that has to do with the end of the world. Two scientists discover that, within roughly six months, a comet will collide with the earth and destroy the world as we know it.
In search of a solution, they go to the United States president, but she does not pay attention to them. Then they are interviewed in a popular television show in which nobody takes them seriously. Due to the commotion caused in the media, the president decides to take advantage of the matter and she commands NASA to prepare equipment to intercept and destroy the comet.
When the operation is well under way, the owner of a big tech company asks for a moment alone with the country’s president, and minutes later she commands that the operation be cancelled. Why? Because since the comet is full of rare minerals, the kind used to make cell phones and computers, it’s better to take advantage of the comet, so they decide not to destroy it.
When the scientists realize that both the government and the businessman are only interested in business, they launch a campaign asking people to look up, because the comet is there; but the government and the tech company launch another campaign telling people not to look up. In the end, the comet destroys our beloved home.
Although the movie is a satire full of dark humor, it made me think that the imminence of the end of the world should in fact lead us to look up, to set our focus on what will not be destroyed. Nevertheless, our enemy has managed to get humankind to accept the message not to look up, and many «set their mind on earthly things» (Philippians 3:19). You and I are called to keep looking up, because «we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior» (verse 20, NLT).
As H. C. G. Moule said, being citizens of heaven means «we live and move (on earth) as those who are (spiritually) in heaven.»» Our minds are set «on things above, not on earthly things» (Colossians 3:2, NIV). And if they aren’t yet, they ought to be.
