“But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life» (John 4:14, NM).
Early one morning I woke up feeling thirsty and thought that, since I was already awake, I would start my devotions earlier. But in the end I decided to sleep a little longer until my alarm sounded. The truth is I was no longer able to sleep very well.
Has that ever happened to you?
That day I went ahead and had my devotion by reading about the story that tells us about the importance of drinking living water.
I realized that, just as it happened that early morning, I sometimes postpone my spiritual hydration, as if it didn’t have any consequences.
Medline Plus medical encyclopedia mentions some interesting facts about hydration.
I invite you to read them and think about how you could apply each of these counsels to your spiritual life:
- Dehydration happens when the body doesn’t have as much water and fluids as it needs. It can be mild, moderate or severe, based on how much of your body’s fluid is lost or not replaced. Severe dehydration is a life-threatening emergency.
- Outlook (Prognosis): If you notice signs of dehydration and treat it quickly, you should recover completely.
- Prevention: Drink plenty of fluids every day, even when you are well. Drink more when the weather is hot or you are exercising.
«He who seeks to quench his thirst at the fountains of this world will drink only to thirst again. Everywhere men are unsatisfied. They long for something to supply the need of the soul. Only One can meet that want. The need of the world, ‘The Desire of all nations,’ is Christ. The divine grace which He alone can impart, is as living water, purifying, refreshing, and invigorating the soul» (The Desire of Ages, ch. 19, p. 187).
Try to start this day off by being physically and spiritually hydrated. You’ll see that Jesus is much more than water in the early morning.
