“Inasmuch as you did to one of least of these My brethren, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:40).
WALKING ACROSS THE STREET. Or walking across the room. According to Bill Hybels, sometimes that is all it takes for someone to receive the greatest gift they could ever be offered: to get to know the God who was also willing to «cross» the distance between heaven and earth in order to save them.
Where did we get the notion that, the more extraordinary our service to God, the greater the glory we give His name? Or that, to witness as missionaries, we have to move to far off lands? Many times the simplest and most «ordinary» actions are the ones that lift Gods name on high. And often, we simply have to «cross the street,» or go «across the room,» to perform them, as the following story illustrates.
Pastor Chad Stuart says that on the night of his conversion, when he arrived at the Friday evening vespers program, it had already started; so he sat in the back. Soon the chaplain of the institution announced they would partake of the rite of foot washing. As soon as Chad heard those words, he stood up to sneak out, but someone grabbed him by the arm.
«Chad, may I wash your feet?»
Chad did not like to take part in the foot washing. To make matters worse, a student he did not like was inviting him. Amazingly, Chad agreed, without imagining that a greater surprise was in store. And it was that as soon as his classmate finished washing his feet, the chaplain made a call to accept Christ.
Chad says, «I had no idea that was going to happen when I walked across the street. And just as I was amazed about saying ‘yes’ to foot washing, when the chaplain said, ‘Who wants to stand up and say, «Jesus, I’ll give You my heart»?’ I found myself standing up. It was the best decision I ever made in my life. It happened because someone was willing to cross the room and say, ‘Hey, can I wash your feet?’ »
Would you like to do something special for the Lord Jesus today? Not something extraordinary, something special. Then do something for someone else: a word of encouragement, an act of compassion, a bite of bread, a glass of water. You do not need to go far to do that; perhaps you only need to «walk across the street,» or «walk across the room:» in your neighborhood, in the office, at school. . .
If the Son of God «crossed eternity» in order to save us, would it be too much to ask for us to «walk across the street» for one of the least of these His brethren?
God of wonders, who risked so much to save me, please help me today to share the indescribable gift of Your salvation with those around me.
