VICES AND POWER

«Do not give your strength to women, nor your ways to that which destroys kings. . ,  l! is not [or kings to drink wine, nor for princes intoxicating drink; Lest they drink and forge( the law, and pervert the justice of all the afflicted» (Proverbs 31:3-5).

King Solomon was one of the wisest men in the world, His penetrating reflections continue to be the reason for interesting studies in different fields of knowledge. Under his leadership, Israel achieved economic prosperity like never before, peace with their neighbors allowed them to concentrate on the development of the country’s infrastructure, the strengthening of their economy, and the construction of large buildings. Solomon’s fame crossed borders and came to the attention of monarchs and political leaders. Several foreign delegations came to see him to ascertain what was said of him and recognized that the greatness of the Hebrew sovereign was far above what they thought. During those years he wrote the Book of Proverbs, a masterpiece of human thought. In the best moments of his life, Solomon adopted one of the regrettable customs of the those in power at his time: polygamy. The king came to have seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines. In addition, sexual promiscuity was accompanied by alcohol and idolatry, a lethal combination for a leader. He began to live a frantic life and abandoned for long periods of time his responsibilities as a ruler. He only cared about diversion and pleasing his women, Ellen white even says that his once noble and manly character became effeminate and enervated—Prophets and Kings, ch. 3, p. 58.

Little by little, he was losing the respect of his collaborators who had admired him so much. There was nothing left of that young specimen who had reached the throne. He had become an arrogant and petty monarch, authoritarian and cruel, dedicated to impoverishing his own people. The inhabitants of Israel, who had once respected him so much, were now clamoring for freedom from Solomon’s tyranny. At the end of his life he repented of his sins, however, the consequences of his actions were irreversible. Upon his death, the kingdom was divided and gave way to a disastrous phase under the leadership of the kings of Israel and Judah.

More than once I have seen the careers of promising young people ruined by vices such as alcohol, drugs, or sexual promiscuity. Some people find it hard to  recover lost time, but there are also those who never get out of the abyss. Today ask the Lord to help you stay away from any kind of vice.
