«Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good» (Genesis 1:31).
As soon as I opened the door and saw her face, I knew something was very wrong. My friend, let’s call her Laura, had red, swollen eyes. I invited her into my house, and we sat down to talk. Then she told me that the fertility treatment had failed again. Laura and her husband had saved money, allowed themselves to dream once again about being parents, and had been disappointed once more. What hurt her the most was feeling it was her fault; that her body and she herself as a woman had «failed.» I hugged her and we cried together. Being a woman is not an easy task!
Women like Laura, and also those who have suffered the emotional torture of miscarriage, often endure a double suffering. On the one hand, they cannot have children; on the other hand, they feel that it reduces their value as women and robs them of their identity. Without minimizing the pain of loss (of both a child and the dream of being mothers), we must remind each other that our identity and the value of our bod ies do not depend on their functionality.
After forming Eve’s body with His own hands, God said that everything he had created was very good. God said these words before Eve gave birth to Cain and even before she consummated her union with Adam. «The good thing about Eve’s body did not lie in what she did with it, but in what God had done in forming it,» Rachael Starke wrote in her article «What are Women’s Bodies For?» Its value «lay objectively in its identity as a bearer of God’s image, not subjectively in its functionality.»
Regardless of your appearance, abilities, or disabilities, whether you are married or single, fertile, or sterile, you are a bearer of God’s image. Your identity does not depend on what your body can or cannot do, but on the One who formed you. Nothing and no one can take away your value.
Dear Lord, when I’m tempted to believe that my value comes from the functionality of my body (what my body is or isn’t able to do), please remind me that my identity depends on You. I was created in Your image to worship You.
