VEGETABLE RACIST

«And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God» (Romans 12:2).

When I was a child, I was a vegetable racist. I liked orange, white, and yellow vegetables, but I was convinced that nothing green could be delicious. My mom obviously had more «progressive» ideas. That’s why she insisted on cooking chard croquettes, my archenemies.

During one of those dinners where I dueled with the croquettes, I decided to try a different tactic. I normally looked at them suspiciously for a long time, until they cooled down on the plate. Then I ate them in a hurry, when my mom scolded me. However, this time I decided to pray. I was only nine years old and I said to God: «Could you make me like croquettes?»

I cut a small piece and took it to my mouth as in slow motion, breathing deeply. I got the surprise of my life when I chewed it and realized it was delicious. Anyway, I didn’t tell Mom just in case the miracle wasn’t repeated!

Today, as an adult, I love vegetables because my palate was trained. Our heart also has a «palate.» Sometimes, like children, we like what’s not healthy. It can be a sedentary lifestyle that we get used to or a type of people we’re attracted to. Or maybe the place we allow our work and appearance to occupy in the formation of our identity. Paradoxically, sometimes what we need is what is most disgusting or fearful.

It is important to train the taste buds of the soul to appreciate what is good. The people of Israel were so accustomed to slavery that when God freed them, they did nothing but complain. Although God gave them manna, they missed Egypt’s cucumbers, fish, and melons (see Numbers 11:5). If we ask Him, God will teach us to enjoy healthy food (physical and emotional). He can radically transform our hearts so that we may delight in eating green vegetables.

Father, please refine my taste and regenerate my heart. Teach me to love the good and to detest the bad. If the criticism I receive today is good and constructive, help me to accept it. Anything that strengthens my character for heaven is like a green vegetable; it’s healthy and I’m not going to refuse to eat it.
