UPWARDLY MOBILE CLASS

Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? (Galatians 1:10).

«Hey, Charles, you wanna earn a few extra yen?»

«Sure. What do I have to do?»

«Teach English to a movie star.»

Wow! Not only was I going to rack in some extra gas money for my much-used-and-abused Yamaha motorcycle, I was going to have the privilege of teaching classes to a roomful of corporate clients, one of whom was a model and much-admired movie star in Japan.

Have you ever heard the word «yuppie»? Although people don’t use it as much anymore, it means «Young, upwardly mobile professional,» and that certainly describes my added collection of students. These young men and women had one goal in mind—to make a million dollars before they turned thirty.  You could see it in their eyes and hear it in their voices. They wanted to learn to speak English so that they could close big-ticket deals with American businesses. Each of them desired to have their pronunciation so perfect that they could compete head-to-head with US competitors. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be rich and working toward the goal as long as you remember that you’ve also got a life to live that must include family, friends, and God. This group didn’t seem to have that concept in mind.

I often wonder what happened to them. I’m certain they won the approval of fellow human beings and probably made their millions too. But did they remember the God I tried to introduce with my smile and encouraging words? Only time will tell.
