For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. PSALM 91:11, NIV
During my college years I spent a year living and studying French in the town of Collonges-sous-Saleve, France, right on the Swiss border next to Geneva. Right behind the college was an enormous, nearly two-thousand-foot rock face called the Saleve. Each morning of the school year as I walked to class, I admired this huge rock face and was thankful I had the opportunity to study nearby. Of course, one of the best things about studying in France was the opportunity to make new friends from different parts of the world with different backgrounds and outlooks on life. After the first few weeks, I had made some new French friends, and they invited me to participate in a little adventure activity.
One Sunday morning we walked to the top of Saleve behind the school. After the vigorous walk, we were soon standing at the top of this enormous cliff face looking down over the campus and the city of Geneva in the distance.
The view was spectacular! Over the next few minutes we scrambled over some rocks to the very edge of the cliff. Next , I was given a harness to put on-we would rappel down the face of the rock, Rappelling involves putting on a harness and tying into a rope line and then backing out over the edge of a cliff and slowly letting out the rope, allowing you to descend the rock face of the mountain.
As I prepare to climb off the cliff, I said a quickly prayer, hoping that my guardian angel knew how to rock climb. I was only kidding myself, but I do that sometimes when I get nervous. I knew God’s angels were always around me, and that brought me comfort and courage as I rappelled down the face of that huge cliff!
