“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stands, and it gives light to everyone in the house.”
MATHHEW 5:14, 15 NIV
If you’ve used electricity to turn on a light, you are probably utilizing the power of coal. Coal is a fossil fuel made from dead plant matter, and it’s actually the single largest source of energy for the generation of electricity in the whole world. There are two types of coal mines-surface mines and underground mines. Underground mines are exactly what the names says, mines that are located deep underground, where tunnel systems are created and coal is removed. In a surface mine, the coal is located closer to the surface, so machines on the surfaces dig down into the ground till they reach coal and then the coal is removed. Then, the hole is usually filled back in with dirt, and a few years later you would never know it had once been a coal mine.
A couple of years ago I visited a coal mine in the state of Wyoming. First, from a platform we looked into the pit where gigantic machines were scooping the coal out and shoveling it into huge dump trucks. During my visit I walked around one of those huge trucks; the tires were twice as tall as me! Once the coal was on the truck, it was brought to another part of the mine, where it was crushed and loaded onto train cars that were lined up. Once the train was full, the coal was taken to its final destination, usually an electric power plant that runs on coal.
It’s amazing to think that the energy we use to turn on light comes from a hidden source underground; but unless the coal is uncovered, it can’t be used to make electricity. Our verse today is similar.
God has given us a light to shine in the world, but you have to ask yourself, am I shining it for everyone to see, or is it covered up and hidden away? There is too much darkness in the world; choose today to bring God’s light out for everyone to see!
