TRUE AMBITION

«But as it is written: eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him» (1 Corinthians 2:9, NKJV).

When God asks us to give up a dream or possession, He is actually inviting us to exchange it for something much bigger. When Jesus asked the rich young ruler to sell everything and follow Him, He was actually offering him greater wealth; wealth that would make the walls of any bank’s safety vault burst with abundance. The young ruler’s problem was that he lacked true ambition. He settled for too little.

In The Weight of Glory, British writer and theologian, C. S. Lewis, described our false ambition as follows: «It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.»

God wants to give us much more than we can even imagine. However, to receive what He offers, sometimes we have to let go of what we have in our hands: our mud pies. In his song, «The Things We Leave Behind,» Christian musician Michael Card explains this process: «It’s hard to imagine the freedom we find from the things we leave behind.» When we let go of dreams we thought would grant us happiness and identity, we find true freedom in Christ.

When Jesus invites us and says «Let it go!» it often seems like a tremendous sacrifice, not a blessing. That is when we need true ambition. The rich young ruler settled for very little; for a life in which his identity depended on his wealth. But Jesus wants us to be free from all our idols. That is why He invites us, «Are you willing to leave what you think gives you value behind and allow Me to be the One who defines you?»

Dear Lord, please help me to have true ambition.
I want to see things eye has not seen, nor ear has heard. I am willing to let go of an anything that prevents me from enjoying the things You have prepared for me.
