Thirteen-year-old Graham Ward positioned his fingers above the old pump organ’s keys. He’d been invited to take part in a special Thanksgiving program and wanted to get some practice in before the big event. The organ, a recent gift to the church by old Mrs. Noland, was as ancient as its benefactor.
Placing his feet on the pedals, Graham began to pump. The right pedal went down easily, but the left pedal was stiff. «What’s going on?» the young musician asked. «I’ve got to practice or I’ll embarrass myself in front of the whole congregation.»
Moving to the back of the instrument, he bent and removed a panel. There, surrounding the workings of the left pump, were several tin cans. «Aha,» he announced. «Can’t play with garbage in the works.»
Graham picked up one of the cans and noticed it was very heavy. Peeking inside, he discovered it was full of money! So were the others.
The boy ran and showed his father what he’d found. «I’m sure Mrs. Noland didn’t know the money was in here when she gave us the organ,» Graham said. «We should take it back, don’t you think?»
When the old woman saw the cans and money stashed in-side, tears filled her eyes. «My husband had been saving for our old age but never told me where he was keeping our treasure,» she explained. «You found it—and could have kept it. But you brought it back to me. Thank you!»
As Graham played the organ for the Thanksgiving program, he felt joyful. So did a lonely widow in the audience whose thankful heart sang with the music.
