TOUGH COMPETITION

Q: I’m almost thirteen. There is this girl I really like, but I have tough competition. Our landlord’s son has known her longer, plus his sister is her best friend. At times when he and I are alone he is OK, but when she is around he is a showoff. Sometimes I just want to punch his face in. I just moved and hardly have any friends here. He tells her the secrets that I tell him. I would really appreciate your help!

A: Sounds to me like your landlord’s son is insecure. He o displays his insecurity by showing off when the girl is around. That is not unusual, as even popular kids can be unsure about themselves.

Don’t allow his behavior to control you. It’s easy to react in anger when someone is treating you like rotten milk. But anger benefits nobody. If it gets hold of you, it eats at you until you become a hateful, bitter bulldog. Take control of yourself and act—don’t react.

Decide how Christ would act toward him and this girl, and try to do the same. Whether or not this will help you win over the girl remains to be seen. Keep in mind, however, that girls tend to be much more perceptive than guys. (We don’t realize that, because we’re not that skilled in social things.) Girls sense that a guy guided by God is more likely to be conscientious, kind, and loving—qualities that attract many girls.
