«The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:to know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding» Proverbs 1:1, 2.
ROSALIND PICARD sincerely believed she did not need God. As a researcher at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she took for granted that religion was for those who were ignorant and that atheism put her at the level of those who are thinkers. One day she realized an educated woman like herself could not afford the luxury of not having read a book as popular as the Bible, so she decided to read it.
When she started reading God’s Word, she «expected to find phony miracles, made-up creatures, and assorted gobbledygook,» but she was pleasantly surprised when she discovered the book of Proverbs was a work full of wisdom. Reading the Bible led her on a journey that placed her in direct contact with the Source of true wisdom. Dr. Picard is currently the founder and director of the Affective Computing Research Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab, and she shares the unfathomable love of God with patients battling health problems.
The woman who thought she was too smart to believe in God’s existence acknowledged she had been ignorant when she had rejected «the greatest Mind in the cosmos—the Author of all science, mathematics, art, and everything else there is to know,»* and today she delights in continuing to learn and explore together with her most incredible Companion, God.
I imagine Dr. Picard was struck by the first statements found in the book of Proverbs: «The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: to know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding, to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion—A wise man will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel» (Proverbs 1:1-5). Have we perhaps not realized all the advantages offered to us by reading God’s Word? The Scriptures help us to know instruction, but also offer us wisdom, prudence, judgment, equity, understanding, discretion, knowledge, and wise counsel.
Reading the Bible will make you «perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works» (2 Timothy 3:17, JUB). You and I need the wisdom Dr. Picard found, and for that we need to do as she did: read God’s Word.
