«And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?» (Matthew 16:26, NLT).

What is most important is not what you do (your job, your accomplishments, your degrees), but who you are becoming. Are you living with gratitude and hope? Are you speaking and acting with integrity? Do you know how to love others and yourself unconditionally? When we plan our day, we often write a to-do list: go to the grocery store, do the laundry. . . and much more! Obviously, it is a good idea to be organized and manage our time well; however, I wonder what would happen if we wrote a list of things to be; if our daily plan was to be patient, be compassionate, be resilient. . . How would my priorities change? I suspect I would even leave a few things undone.

We lead frantic lives, as if juggling flaming torches. Trying to balance our careers, family and church, we go faster and faster. We run from place to place, exhausted and irritable, thinking we have no other option. And if for any reason we spend five minutes without doing anything, we feel guilty. God wants to set us free from that productive slavery. Therefore, he calls us to be quiet and rest (Matthew 11:28-30). He invites us to prioritize being and not doing. «God never tells His people: ‘Hurry up, move, faster!»‘ writes Cindi McMenamin in When Women Long for Rest, When on Empty. «Instead, God’s words are, ‘Be still,’ ‘wait,’ ‘rest.’ The holy path is one will take time to travel. It will include waiting. It will include trusting. But it will be peaceful, and you will find rest for your soul.»

We need to receive emotional courage to slow down. Let us ask God for common sense to do less and be more. «Embarrassingly few Christians ever reach this level of authenticity; most Christians are just too busy,» reflect Bill Hybels in Too Busy not to Pray. Today, as you plan your day with Jesus, dare to slow down. Remember, the important thing is who you are becoming.

Dear Lord, I confess my lifestyle is stressful because I have allowed the world to impose its agenda and crazy pace on me.
Please heal me and give me rest.
Teach me to slow down in life, to empty it of what is not useful, and make room for silence.
Remind me that what matters is who I am becoming.
