Missionaries do a lot of traveling. It’s part of their job. Sometimes what’s going on within the country affects the journey. Such was the case when Kimber’s dad found himself on an old Douglas DC-6 aircraft flying between the island of Singapore and Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. A war raged below. Saigon happened to be the prime target of enemy forces this particular night as the missionary’s airplane lumbered through the hot, humid air. Weeks before, ground fire had hit a commercial jetliner, knocking out an engine, but the plane had managed to reach the safety of the airport. Kimber’s father knew the DC-6 flew lower and slower than the jet!
Just as the pilot radioed the tower for permission to land, enemy forces on the ground began firing up at the plane. Machine guns clattered. Tracer bullets streaked upward like fingers of fire reaching out to catch the aircraft. All that Kimber’s dad could do was sit and watch as the deadly bullets approached closer and closer.
Then a strange thing happened. Even though the plane was low, the bullets seemed to grow tired and fade away before they reached it. When the pilot botched the first landing, they had to go around and try another approach. More machine guns. More bullets. But this time the enemy soldiers couldn’t seem to aim straight, and their shots veered off in wild angles. Soon they simply gave up. When the airplane’s wheels chirped onto the pavement, pilot and passengers breathed prayers of thanksgiving. Those bullets weren’t the only tired things in Saigon that night.
