THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER HEARD OF HIM

As Scripture says: » Those who have never heard from him will see; those who had never heard of him will understand «Romans 15:21

In 2006, Jim Hanon’s film A punta de lance was released, which tells the true story of five missionaries from the United States who, in 1956, set out to evangelize the members of the Huaorani tribe in Ecuador. In the beginning, it all started with an exchange of gifts; that was the method by which the missionaries wanted to win the favor of the Huaorani. However, a tragedy soon ensued: warriors from the tribe attacked with spears, killing the five missionaries. Among them was a young man named Jim Elliot.

Jim Elliot was married to a young woman named Elisabeth and they had a baby just a few months old. When he lost his life at the hands of the Huaorani warriors, the most natural thing for his wife would have been to not want to know anything about them, to resent them for life, perhaps to flee as far as possible … But, despite the trauma she experienced. Elisabeth decided, two years after the death of her husband, to go live with the Huaorani, together with her daughter, to tell them about Christ.

It seems that Elisabeth Elliot was of the same mind as the apostle Paul, who defended going to preach to those who had never heard of Christ, to those who had never heard of him (see Rom. 15:21). And that idea was taken from an Old Testament passage found in Isaiah 52:15.

Romans 15:21 guides us to a true need: to be a light to those who live in the darkness of ignorance. Perhaps today, in the countries where we live in Latin America, the name of Christ is known, but Christ himself, his true character and his message, are still great unknown to the common people. What will we do about it? Will we take the witness of the people who, before us, preach the Holy Scriptures? I do not believe that the call is to travel to remote places on earth (which obviously can and should be done) but to be attentive to those who do not know the message of salvation and make it known in word and deed, in a simple and attractive that can change lives.

In every country, in every city, in every village, there are people waiting to receive the good news.
