No one knows his name. We have learned that he was a shepherd boy in ancient Greece and lived 350 years before the birth of Christ. One day he was watching his sheep when in the distance he saw the glimmer of sun on metal. «The Persians,» he gasped. «Their army is on the move, and I’m the only one who knows.» Then he stiffened. «If I don’t warn the city of Athens, many will die and my country will be lost forever.»
He got up to leave, then hesitated. «My sheep. Who will watch them?» But the thought of his beautiful country falling into the hands of Persian invaders was stronger than his concern for his flock. Sheep could be replaced. People couldn’t. Leaving his hilltop perch, the boy began running toward the city. Stones bruised his bare feet. Twigs and grass cut into his skin. But on he ran, gasping for breath.
Passing through a forest, he stepped on a large thorn and felt new pain surge up his leg. Bending down, he broke off the thorn and continued running with part of it still embedded in his sole.
At long last he reached the city and stumbled to the government building. Bursting into the senate chamber, he shouted, «The Persian army is in the valley, and they’re headed here.» Then he collapsed on the floor. Like America’s Paul Revere, he’d delivered the warning in time to save many lives.
Today, as you go about your business, keep an eye open for the advancing forces of evil. When you see them, sound the warning. Sound it long and loud!
