«I know that whatever God does, it shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, and nothing taken from it. God does it, that men should fear before Him» (Ecclesiastes 3:14).
About two years ago, I went through a stage of great anxiety. I had never experienced anything like it. My anxiety was as dense as fog. It settled in my mind and prevented me from thinking clearly. It was as if a sumo wrestler was sitting on my chest, making my breathing difficult. I couldn’t recognize myself! I had always been one of those people who woke up cheerful and carefree. However, at that stage of my life, anxiety covered everything like dust on an abandoned town. I remember that the hardest part was wondering if things would change or if I would have to live like that for the rest of my life. Now, as I look back, I know that anxiety passes like an ocean wave and that it is possible to stay afloat.
This too shall pass! Sixteen letters full of such hope: T-h-i-s-t-o-o-s-h-a-l-l-p-a-s-s. This too shall pass. The only eternal thing—as King Solomon wrote—is what God does. Only the work of His hands is definitive and permanent. Everything else changes; it goes up and down with the tide. If you’re going through a difficult time, take a deep breath and repeat with me: «This too shall pass.» I assure you, it’s true! Friend, you are going to smile again. You are going to find a new job. You are going to heal. You are going to feel the summer sun on your skin again, because winter doesn’t last forever.
One of my favorite authors, Shauna Niequist, said we should practice faith in the spring. «l don’t know where you are these days, what is broken, and what is beautiful in your life. I don’t know if you’re in a season of sweetness or sadness, but I’m learning that nothing lasts forever. . If you look everywhere these days, the landscape is winter, desolate, and lonely. Practice believing in spring. It always, always comes . . . New life will emerge from this very ground. This season will end and something completely new will follow.»
At the end of winter in England, you can see the green leaves of daffodils peeking out of the snow. When I see those green dots appearing on the white carpet, I know spring is coming. It always comes!
Dear Lord, when the ground of my life is frozen and I find it hard to believe that something can sprout again, give me faith in the spring. This too shall pass! Train my eyes to detect the first signs of hope: the little green buds peeking through the snow. Spring will come because it always comes.
