THIS IS NOT MY PLATE

«And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose» (Romans 8:28).

Years ago, on one of my first dates with Nigel, the waitress confused our orders. She served Nigel my plate and served me his. «l think you have my plate,» I told Nigel, trying not to sound alarmed because we were just getting to know each other. «No, this is what I asked for,» he answered, smiling, and began to eat. I looked with disdain at the plate in front of me; it was basically a salad. Even though I’m a vegetarian, I would never order salad in a restaurant. I think it’s a waste of money! I confess that I spent much of the evening feeling gastronomic envy and thinking: This is not what I asked for.

Sometimes God gives us something different from what we pray for. We see colleagues and friends everywhere receive exactly what we wanted: an excellent job, a hardworking husband, healthy children . . . While other women sit down to enjoy a succulent plate of blessings, we must settle for salad. At times like this, we have two options: envy or trust. Ellen G. White reminded us in The Ministry of Healing: «Let God plan for you. . . . God never leads His children otherwise than they would choose to be led, if they could see the end from the beginning and discern the glory of the purpose which they are fulfilling as co-workers with Him.»—ch. 40, p. 479.

One day, when Peter and John went to the temple to pray, they met a lame man. Without knowing the power of the Holy Spirit that dwelled in the disciples, the man asked them for some coins. Thanks to God’s mercy, the lame beggar received something very different. Peter said to him: «Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk» (Acts 3:6). The man who had been lame from birth immediately stood up and praised God while leaping. If it’s your turn today to eat a different dish than you ordered, choose to trust. There is no event, however bad, or circumstance, however difficult it may be, that God cannot recycle for your good.

Dear Lord, when things don’t go the way I expected, help me to trust You.
Even if I cannot discern the glow of Your purposes,
Please help me believe that You love me and that You will never abandon me. Amen.
