«Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God» (Romans 12:2).
Since I went to work by bike almost every day, I got used to checking the weather forecast in the morning. That morning, the temperature was 500F, but the thermal sensation was 370F because of the wind. Wind affects our perception of temperature. When there is wind, the moisture on the skin evaporates faster, and that cools us down. That’s why, even if the temperature doesn’t change, we feel colder.
Victimhood and pessimism are like the wind that batter the soul. When we get used to seeing life from a negative perspective, whatever the actual temperature may we feel cold. In Battlefield of the Mind, Joyce Meyer wrote, «On the days when I was extremely negative, I could enter the house that someone had just renovated, and instead of seeing and commenting on how beautiful everything around me was, I saw tiny corner of the wallpaper that was coming unstuck or a spot on the window. I am grateful that Jesus set me free and now I can enjoy the good things in my life!»
Like Joyce, many of us have an emotional radar that is hypersensitive to error and immune to beauty. However, we can be transformed by the renewal of our minds (Romans 12:1, 2). The Bible says that we must submit our thoughts; we must take them captive, make them slaves of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). Thoughts we don’t submit will enslave us. The apostle Paul used a language of war in this chapter; he talked about destroying fortresses and tearing down arguments. Paul understood that our mind is strategic battlefield. Defeatist thoughts are enemy missiles. When we bring them captive to Christ, He diverts them from their course and bursts into enemy territory. Submitting our thoughts to the authority of Christ means going on the counterattack.
Christ wants to renew our minds to give us a wise and balanced look at things. If allow Him to, He will heal our thought patterns. It’s not too late. Jesus wants to begin to work a miracle in you today.
Dear Lord, I submit my mind and thoughts to Your authority.
Please help me adopt good thought patterns, to focus on things that are good and true.
I know You can work a miracle and renew my mind. Amen.
