«Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness» (Lamentations 3:22, 23, NIV).
«GOD’S ‘RIVERS’ OF MERCY,» writes Matthew Henry, «run fully and constantly, but never run dry. [His currents] are new every morning.» Just as manna fed the children of Israel daily in the wilderness, every morning we receive a new and fresh provision of God’s mercy. It never runs dry!
To have a better understanding of the beauty of the promise in today’s verses, it is good to know that the Hebrew word that is translated here as «mercy» (Heb. chesed) is mentioned about 245 times in the Old Testament. Although the term has been mostly translated as «favor,» it has also been translated as «good deed,» «goodliness,» «kindness,» «mercy,» «pity,» «kindly,» «merciful» . . .
Do you get the idea? When the Scriptures say that God’s mercy «is new every morning,» what it reminds us is that, regardless of how difficult the trials we have to face today are, sufficient grace will be available to us, sufficient mercy, sufficient kindness, sufficient pity, because the God who was faithful to His promises yesterday will also be faithful today and tomorrow. Why is that? Because «his mercies never cease!»
I recently read a story by H. M. S. Richards that illustrates what we want to say. Richard says that in a congregation Rowland Hill was pastoring there was a very poor man and also a very wealthy man. One day, the wealthy man gave Pastor Hill a significant amount of money to give to the poor man in the way he most saw fit. He could give him all the money at once, or in installments. The pastor chose the second method. So he sent the man an envelope with a five pound note, and a note that said, «More is on the way.» Every once in a while, the pastor sent him a similar amount, with the little note: «More is on the way.»
Don’t you think that is how God’s grace is? We received an abundant «portion» yesterday. But there will be a new provision for today. And «there is more on the way» for tomorrow! No wonder Ellen G. White wrote that «The fountain of grace and knowledge is ever flowing. It is inexhaustible.»—God’s Amazing Grace (1973 ed.), p. 124. What does this mean in practice? Well, that if, for instance, in the past you have known the joy of Gods peace, today «more is on the way.» If you have enjoyed His forgiveness, today «more is on the way.» If you have enjoyed His companionship, today «more is on the way.»
Heavenly Father, today my heart praises You because
Your mercy never ceases and because it is new every morning.
