THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS IN THE SPIRITUAL LIFE

«So Jesus answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time. and in the age to come, eternal life’ «(Mark 10:29, 30).

BEING A MOTHER means running around from the moment you get up until you go to bed. My life goes by in a constant hustle. I wake up at 3:40 to pray and read the Bible; then I prepare breakfast for my husband and my children, as well as three snacks and three lunches for them to take with them; I then supervise my children so they leave on time to school. The rest of the morning I have to hurry with my university duties, so I can go pick up my children from school at 3:00 p.m. From there I take them to their extracurricular activities and to buy the materials that have been requested for them at school. Once at home, I supervise their homework, we have the evening worship, I put them to bed, and then I return to my work for the university. With the fast pace that comes from so much activity, one day I made a bad decision.

On a Friday when I needed to buy fruit, I wanted to save a little time, so I left the car parked at a bus stop so I could quickly cross the street, buy the fruit, and get back to go pick up my kids. When I got back to the car, a police officer was issuing me a ticket. I turned pale and was embarrassed at having broken the law knowingly, just to save myself a few minutes. Now I was paying the consequences. Thank God, it was not as serious as I thought, because the police officer had not yet called a tow truck. I apologized profusely and left, feeling like a bad citizen and a bad Christian.

Sometimes, in our spiritual life, we want to take shortcuts as well; we want to see certain results without going through all the processes that are required in order to obtain them. Let us look at some examples: we want to know the Bible in depth, but without the effort of setting aside a daily time to dedicate to its study; we want to have well-behaved children, but without doing the work of educating ourselves to be an example of patience and good manners for them; we want stars in our crowns, but we do not bring God’s love to others; we want a powerful spiritual life, but we do not make prayer a priority.

Wishing to be good Christians without going through any inconveniences does not work, because God is not a God of shortcuts. God likes to work over a low flame.
