THE WORLD OF THINGS OR THE WORLD OF PEOPLE?

«No man ever spoke like this Man!» (John 7:46).

CAN YOU IMAGINE what would happen if the teacher taught, not the classroom, but the student? Or if the speaker were to address, not the auditorium, but the individual who is part of the audience? Or if the doctor saw in the sick person, a human being rather than just a patient. In other words, what if we became interested in people because they are people, and not because of the benefit we could derive from them? According to Paul Tournier, the result would be completely revolutionary.

These questions stem from the subject that Dr. Tournier examines in one of his well-known works. In order to illustrate his point of view, he recounts an experience he had while attending a medical conference in Weissenstein, Switzerland. Earlier that day, he had given a talk in which a colleague of his had done an excellent job translating. When Tournier congratulated him, the man took the opportunity to explain What had motivated him to do his best: «Before the talk,» the translator explained, «someone told me that there was a doctor in the room who was having a very hard time understanding what was being said. So I decided to translate for him. Not once did I take my eyes off him, so I could tell whether he understood what I was translating.

How interesting! In that room, there were probably hundreds of doctors participating in the conferences, but the interpreter was translating for one of them in particular. He basically had an audience of just one person!

When I read his experience, I recalled a statement found in the book The Desire of Ages according to which, while the Lord spoke, He “watched with deep earnest- ness the changing countenances of His hearers.” When those who heard him became interested in what He was saying, it gave Him “great satisfaction.”—ch. 26, p. 255.

Whether He spoke to individuals or to a crowd, the Lord Jesus saw faces. His interest was focused on individuals: their struggles, their Sorrows, their trials.

And His greatest joy came when He saw that His words, like a healing balm, brought relief to their broken hearts. That’s why today’s text says that no one ever spoke like
Him. The fact is that no one loved like Him!

Knowing that Jesus is personally interested in you, though millions of people live on this planet, should motivate you to praise Him today as the wonderful Savior that He is. He knows the wounds of your heart and is doing something right now to heal them.

Thank You, dear Jesus, because not only do You know what causes me pain,
but You also take a personal interest in me. Thank You for loving me
unconditionally, although I still don’t know what I’ve done to deserve it.
