THE WATER BOTTLE WALK

So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. JAMES 1:19, NKJV

When I traveled in Egypt, we ended up getting sick on the first day from drinking the water. For the rest of our time there, we made a point of making sure we always drank bottled water. Egypt is not like North America, where there is a convenience store or gas station on practically every corner. It was a lot harder to find stores with something as simple as bottled water. We decided it would be best to ask for directions to see where we could find a nearby place to buy some bottled water. We spotted a local man and approached him. We didn’t speak any Arabic, and he didn’t speak very much English, although he did speak enough to tell us that he knew where we needed to go. He motioned for us to follow him, and soon we were on our way to find bottled water. We were very excited because we were very thirsty, but we started to get concerned when, ten minutes later, we were still walking. We were also concerned because the streets we were walking on were getting narrower and quieter. We thought it was unusual that we would have to go to such lengths to find bottled water. After a forty-five-minute walk, our guide finally announced that we had arrived. We went into a little old storefront, and the man introduced us to the owner. That’s when we discovered just how much we had been misunderstood. Even though we had asked for «water bottle» he had somehow understood «water bong.» A water bong is a type of water pipe apparatus used in Egypt to smoke!

Misunderstandings between people are common. Sometimes they lead to arguing and fighting. What should you do when there is a possible misunderstanding between you and someone else? The answer is in today’s verse!
