THE TWENTY-FOUR-HOUR VISA

«Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.» MATTHEW 6:19, 20, NKJV

While studying in France, we were given two weeks off to explore Europe, so I joined up with four other buddies and we rented a car to tour Eastern Europe. At that time, communists ruled in several eastern European countries, and opportunities to visit those places were very rare. We thought it would be educational to visit a place living under the communist rule, so we decided to visit Czechoslovakia.

Today, this country doesn’t exist, because after communism fell, it divided into two countries, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. During our expedition, it was still one communist country. Part of the requirements to enter was to convert a minimum of ten U.S. dollars into their money to spend there. After fulfilling all the requirements, we excitedly received a visa to visit the country—for twenty-four hours. We drove to the capital, Prague—a beautiful city. There was no commercialism there like in North America.

There was nothing to buy or sell. No one could have their own business. When it came time to spend our ten dollars, we discovered there was nothing to buy! The only thing we found was an ice-cream stand that charged five cents per cone. I think we each ate four or five cones, but we still had to leave with most of our Czech money because there was nothing to buy. Once we left, we never found anyone to trade our Czech money back into U.S. dollars. Even though it’s been more than twenty-five years, I still have my Czech money. Of course, the money is worthless since that country doesn’t exist anymore. As a matter of fact, everything on this earth will someday novo no value. Earthly treasures are temporary. I suggest we instead focus on heavenly treasures!
