Therefore, brethren, stands fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle. 2 THESSALONIANS 2:15, NKJV
While in Jordan, we had breakfast early in the morning, but lunch wouldn’t happen till we were back in camp around one o’clock. That’s a lot of hours in between! Fortunately, each day around 9:30 A.M. we would stop working and take a break to have what we called “second breakfast,” made up of delicious falafels. In Jordan, falafels are as common as hamburgers are in the United States or tacos in Mexico. They consist of pita bread that is stuffed with a chickpea patty, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a yummy white sauce.
Our dig site was located on land that belonged to a local sheik, who gave us permission to dig there. Because the sheik allowed our team to dig his land, we were considered to be his guests. The tradition is that guests are served tea at 11:00 A. M while they are on your property. Every day, from a mile away, we saw an elderly Jordanian man with his servants walking toward our dig site. His servant carried a tray with a tea kettle and a bunch of tiny cups. When he arrived at the site, he was all smiles, and he would tell our interpreter that because we were his guests, we had to stop working and drink tea with him. He did this every single day for weeks!
Does your family have traditions? Does your church? In 2 Thessalonians we are reminded that traditions help us to be faithful about things we’ve been taught. There is one very important tradition I would like to encourage you to add to your life: morning devotions. For morning devotions to really be of value, you have to spend time doing it every morning.
The reason “morning” is important is that it sets the tone for the rest of your day. Don’t you want to make sure you start each day right? Star each day by spending time with God. In no time you will notice the changes in your life!
