THE TINKLING OF TINY BELLS

EVERYDAY OBJECTS

«Make pomegranates out of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and attach them to the hem of the robe, with gold bells between them» (Exodus 28:33).

In July, 2011, Eli Shukron, a renowned Israeli archeologist, found a tiny bell in an ancient water pipe. Its origins dated back two thousand years and it was identified as part of a High Priest’s robe.

The robe had lots of tiny bells that jingled with each step taken. Everyone heard him arrive. Everyone heard him leave.

Finding that tiny bell not only proves the Bible’s accuracy once again and the precision with which the Jews carried out the symbols God had established for the temple, but it also leads us to reflect on the daily sacrifices that took place. Jesus walked down the streets of Jerusalem and, probably, heard the tinkling of those tiny bells on the High Priest’s robe.

Jesus would become the living sacrifice that would put an end to that whole system of rituals that so fittingly exemplified His love and sacrifice, a system that had in turn become so common and lacking in meaning to those who didn’t really understand who the Messiah was.

People heard the jingling of the High Priest’s tiny bells. Meanwhile, Jesus walked right beside them.

Today, we may have lost our sensitivity toward spiritual things or we might simply consider them as one more «sound, » when they are actually pointing to Jesus, the living sacrifice who walks beside us.

When ascending to heaven after His resurrection, Jesus would begin His work as our High Priest. Paul says, «For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence» (Hebrews 9:24, NIV).

‘(Christ’s work for the redemption of men and the purification of the universe from sin will be closed by the removal of sin from the heavenly sanctuary and the placing of these sins upon Satan, who will bear the final penalty» (Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 30, p. 358).

The Messiah, our Redeemer and High Priest, won the final victory.

May we decide to walk with greater awareness of the One who is beside us and the triumph He’s won.

Find an everyday object today that reminds you of your Savior and memorize a verse related to it.
